The term pleural plaques refers to areas of scarring on the lining of the lungs (pleura). They are usually small, benign patches of thickening that can eventually become hardened (known as calcified plaques). Mostly, they develop around 10 to 20 years from the time of exposure to asbestos.
Generally pleural plaques do not cause any symptoms unless they are very widespread. They are more an indication of a history of previous asbestos exposure. Anyone diagnosed with pleural plaques is at a small but significant increased risk of developing other asbestos related diseases, such as mesothelioma.
As most people who develop pleural plaques do not have any symptoms, the condition is usually found by coincidence when the person is examined for something else.
Usually, a diagnosis is made by a chest x-ray or scan.
Physical symptoms are rare in sufferers of pleural plaques. However as they are an indication that the lungs have been exposed to and affected by asbestos, people with pleural plaques can become anxious about the possibility of developing other asbestos related conditions in the future.
Previously, it was often possible for sufferers of pleural plaques to claim compensation. Recently, however, the House of Lords decided that compensation should no longer be awarded.
It is still advisable, however, to seek the advice of a specialist solicitor if you have been diagnosed with pleural plaques. Our lawyers can provide you with information and advise you about how we can help if you develop a further asbestos related condition in the future.
