Mesothelioma Compensation Secured for Former Maintenance Fitter

13th June 2012

Our specialist industrial disease solicitors recently secured compensation for a retired fitter suffering from the fatal asbestos-related disease, mesothelioma.

Exposed to Asbestos at Work

In the late 1960s and early 1970s our client worked for a large chemical company as a fitter. The pipes and boilers at his workplace were lagged with asbestos and he would often work at close quarters with colleagues who were removing and applying the lagging. He would also have to cut away pieces of lagging himself sometimes, in order to work on the pipes.

Our client was not provided with protective equipment to prevent him from inhaling the harmful asbestos fibres and he was never warned about the dangers.

In 2011 he began to suffer serious breathing difficulties and tests were carried out at hospital. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a fatal form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. After his diagnosis he underwent painful surgical procedures and chemotherapy to treat his symptoms and attempt to slow the progression of his illness.

Industrial Disease Compensation

The claimant, a man in his late 60s with 2 adult children, appointed our expert lawyers to assist him with a compensation claim against his former employer. They were responsible for his illness as they negligently exposed him to a hazardous substance.

We understand the importance of moving quickly in mesothelioma cases and, using our expertise, we make every effort to bring cases to a successful conclusion in the shortest time possible.

In this case we were able to secure a settlement from the other side within 6 months of beginning the claim, after rejecting two lower offers to ensure that he received the full amount he was entitled to. It was a great relief to our client that his wife’s future would be financially secure.
