Electrician Injured at Work Receives Compensation

12th May 2010

We recently secured £62,000 compensation for a council employee, who suffered a knee injury in an accident at work when he fell from a height.

Accident at Work

At the time of his workplace accident, our client was carrying out some work at an unoccupied house. He and a colleague had been sent there to update some wiring before a new tenant took residence.

As he was descending the stairs, the heel of his shoe caught on an exposed stair gripper and he fell forwards, landing heavily onto his knee at the bottom. The carpets had been taken up prior to his arrival, but the gripper was left in place in error and he was not given any warning about its presence.

The accident left the claimant’s knee swollen and painful and he visited hospital, where he was diagnosed with damage to the ligaments and cartilage. He had to take time off from work and found it difficult to walk, drive, play with his children or carry out jobs around the house during his recovery.

He underwent physiotherapy treatment to help regain the use of his knee, however he was left with long term problems and was unable to return to his former job, so it was necessary for him to take a lower paying role. He therefore suffered a considerable loss of earnings and future pension rights in addition to his personal injury.

Personal Injury Claim

Our client felt that his employer could have prevented his accident if greater care was taken over health and safety, so he appointed our expert lawyers to assist him in making a personal injury claim.

We began a case against his employer and it was necessary to commence court proceedings. We rejected initial offers of damages that did not fully reflect the impact the accident had on our client, however it was eventually possible to negotiate a settlement of £62,000 compensation in respect of his injuries and losses.
