Personal Injury Claim for Employee Left Disabled by Accident at Work

6th October 2009

Our specialist personal injury lawyers recently acted on behalf of a man who sustained serious hand injuries in an accident at work. We recovered compensation on his behalf in a successful personal injury claim.

Injured at Work

The claimant was cleaning a valve on a piece of machinery at the time of his accident. He believed that the power supply to the equipment had been isolated, however this was not the case and it activated suddenly. This caused serious injuries to his dominant hand and fingers and also arm and shoulder injuries.

Our client required hospital treatment including three operations, one of which was to amputate his index finger, and extensive physiotherapy. He required a lot of care and assistance during his recovery, as his personal injury left him unable to perform many simple day-to-day tasks.

Although he was eventually able to return to work after an extended absence, he was left with a permanent disability. He is no longer able to write or drive well and has difficulty handling smaller objects. Our client also suffered psychological injuries and was left self-conscious about the appearance of his scarred hand.

Compensation Claim

The injured employee instructed our lawyers, who have extensive experience in workplace accident cases, to assist him in making a compensation claim. His employer conducted an enquiry into the incident and found that there was an unsafe system of work, so they admitted responsibility for what happened.

We obtained medical evidence as to the extent of our client’s injuries and how they affected him and we were able to negotiate a settlement of £37,000 in damages. This sum took into account the pain and suffering caused by his injury and also his financial losses, including travel and medical expenses, care costs and other expenses related to the injury.
