Lack of Workplace Safety Causes Employee’s Injury at Work

10th November 2008

A psychiatric nurse who suffered injuries to his wrist as the result of an accident at work recovered compensation with help from our specialist personal injury lawyers.

Accident at Work

Our client was called to assist a colleague with a patient and attempted to go through the main doors on the ward. He put out his hand to open them and it went straight through the glass panel.

There were no handles on the door and members of staff had complained previously that the swing of the door should be adjusted, however no risk assessments or alterations were carried out until after the claimant’s accident.

He suffered severe lacerations to the wrist of his dominant hand, causing damage to a main nerve and the tendons to his thumb, index and middle fingers to be severed.

Personal Injury Claim

The claimant instructed our lawyers, who have extensive experience in cases involving workplace accidents, to assist him in recovering compensation.

A claim was made against his employer, on the basis that they exposed him to an unnecessary risk of personal injury and could have foreseen that an accident may occur. They refused to negotiate a settlement and our lawyers had to commence court proceedings, which were successful and resulted in an award of £15,000 in damages for our client.
