Teacher Awarded Compensation for Ankle Injury at Work

22nd February 2012

We recently represented a teacher in a personal injury claim after her ankle was badly damaged through tripping accidents at her workplace.

Unsafe Grounds

Our client was employed at a college and she was walking across the grounds when her first accident at work occurred. There was an accumulation of leaves several inches deep which had built up over time and her foot became caught, causing her to fall. This accident left her with facial injuries, bruising to her elbow and knee and damage to her ankle.

Unfortunately, she went on to suffer further accidents on the college grounds. On one occasion her already injured ankle twisted over when she stepped into a hole on a footpath, then a further accident happened due to a tripping hazard left across a walkway by builders.

She was diagnosed with ligament damage to her ankle and, despite having physiotherapy treatment, she suffered long-term problems. Her personal injury affected her ability to drive, exercise or stand for any length of time.

Workplace Accident Claim

The injured employee appointed our expert personal injury lawyers to assist her in a compensation claim. She felt her employer was responsible for her accident because they failed to provide a safe workplace.

There was a long standing problem with leaves at the location of the first accident. Previously they had been managed by groundskeepers but this was no longer the case. Another member of staff had also reported the leaves as an issue before our client’s accident occurred, but they were not cleared away until the day after she fell. Our client also felt that the footpath should have been free of defects and the builders should have acted more safely.

We pursued a case against her employer and the builders on site and secured £7,000 compensation in respect of her injuries and her related financial losses and expenses.
